Hawke’s Bay Schools Cycling Championships

Strong Team Effort
The inaugural cycle championships took place over 2 days last weekend.  While not aimed at primary aged children, Haumoana entered four individuals in the 20km Saturday Road Race and a team of 4 in the 18km Team Time Trial on Sunday.

The Road Race proved to be a real challenge for the boys who mixed it well with intermediate children from throughout Hawke’s Bay as well as Manawatu and Taupo.  Will was the top finisher in 8th place with George B making the top ten and Barney in twelfth .

Familiar Faces
Sunday’s Team Time Trial demonstrated the real strength of the team – working together!  The 4 boys, Wesley, Will, Noah and George completed the 18km windy, undulating course in 35minutes 47seconds to finish in second place, beaten by less than a minute by the strong HNI team (which contained 3 ex-pupils).

Drowning Quatrain

Drowning

Mind spinning with lack of air

I belong to the sea now if fear

Flashing spots of light dance in my eyes

As I sink down into my new demise

My precious bubbles of air float up high

Forehead, lungs and chest burn with every try

Arm reaching up as I continue below

I can feel death approaching, my old foe

Water gurgles, forcing itself down into my chest

Life slipping out of my grasp, when can I rest?

My world turns dark, pitch black

As I fade away, as I go slack

All my memories are nevermore

My lifeless body hits the seafloor

The hallway to the light has closed

So has my life, gone long ago
