Room 6 @ CAMP KAITAWA 2013
Notice #4

25 November
Dear Parents

One week to go before camp and a few reminders, as it is a busy couple of weeks.

1.         GEAR CHECK

On Wednesday, I need all children to bring the following gear to school for a gear check

 ·         1 pair of covered shoes suitable for walking

·         I x raincoat

·         2 x thermal tops

·         1 x thermal longs

·         1 x beanie (or other warm hat)

Remember if you have been unable to source any of the above from friends, op shops etc.  I need to know.

N.B.  Some children will be bringing in spare items that they are willing to share.

2.       CHILI BINS

We need to borrow several large chili bins to transport food to Kaitawa.  Please let me know if you have one available for us to use.  (To be dropped off at school on Friday)

 3.       BAKING

Each child is required to bring a small amount of baking for morning and afternoon teas.  This can be brought in on Tuesday (camp) morning next week.  Items that spoil quickly such as muffins are not advisable.

Please make sure that all baking is NUT and SESAME SEED free!

4.       Life Jackets

If you have a child-sized life jacket in good condition, could you please let me know.  We require 6 extra life jackets to maximise kayak time.

5.       Camp Cookout

The children have been placed in groups to organise a camp cookout on the first evening at Camp Kaitawa.  This is a cooperative activity and not meant to be an expensive meal.  Please advise your children if their ideas are not practical.

2. Next Wednesday, there will be a gear check.  No need to bring everything but I need to see
  • 2 x thermal tops
  • 1 x thermal longs
  • 1 x raincoat
  • 1 x decent walking shoes

If you have extras of any of these items that can be shared with other children, please contact me or send them to school (named so I can return them).  You may have clothes or shoes at home that your child has grown out of but these may fit someone else in the class.

Notice #3

UPDATE – 4st November
This newsletter also includes ‘optimist yachting’ permission slip
Dear parents/caregivers

Room 6 children will be attending camp at the Camp Kaitawa near Lake Waikaremoana this term.  All children are expected to participate in the 4 days and 3 nights away from home.

There will be a camp meeting on Wednesday 13th November at 5.30pm in Room 6.

PURPOSE OF THE CAMP

This is an opportunity for the children to:

- think and work interdependently

                                                       - take responsible risks and

                                                       - develop leadership, initiative and good decision-making skills

NUMBERS ATTENDING CAMP

Room 6 will have 28 children attending camp.

DAYS & DATES

Camp Dates are Tuesday 3rd December to Friday 6th December 2013.  We will leave from school on Tuesday at 9.00am travelling by private cars and hire van to Camp Kaitawa.  We will return from camp on Friday to be back at school by 3.00 pm.  We ask you to pick children up from school, as they will have their packs and may be tired.

PARENTAL CONSENT & HEALTH PROFILE

Could this please be filled in and returned as soon as possible to enable us to collate information for the benefit of your child.

COST OF CAMP

The cost for camp is $150 pp.  The cost includes food, drink, camp fee, camp personnel and activities.  Payment of this fee can be returned to the office by Friday 22nd November .  It is hoped no child be denied this experience because of cost.   This fee also includes Optimist Yachting which we will be participating in on the following Monday.

SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN

An experienced group of parents will be on the campsite.  Your child will be supervised 24 hours each day.  If there are special problems such as allergies, diet, medicine, let the teacher know on the attached form.  We shall endeavour to treat the matter as you would at home with the strictest confidence.  In the event of an emergency, parents will be contacted as soon as possible.

TRANSPORT

Children will be travelling by private and/or hire vehicles.

PARENT HELP

I was inundated with offers of help from parents earlier in the year.  We had to use a ‘draw system’ to choose from the many applicants.  The selected parents will transport, assist with day to day running of the camp and participate in all activities.  Thank you all for your offers of support.

I still require help and transport for the Optimist Yachting trip on the Monday following camp.

 CLOTHING/EQUIPMENT LIST FOR CHILDREN

Important!  Camp Kaitawa is 610m above sea level and subject to changeable weather conditions

This is on a separate sheet to refer to before going on Camp.  Clothing should be warm and serviceable, not your best clothing.  ALL clothing should be named.  (This is very important).  I have encouraged the children to take some responsibility for organising their own gear by checking items off the list as they are packed.

 FOOD
Each child is required to bring baking or fruit to be shared with others for morning, afternoon teas and supper.

A bulk donation of fresh fruit would also be welcomed – see me if you can help out.

Children will need to provide their own morning tea, lunch and a drink for the first day on camp as well as ingredients for their ‘cook up’.  All other meals, snacks, drinks will be provided.

We hope this experience will be of great benefit to your child and will lay the foundations for a greater appreciation of outdoor living.  Please reply with the necessary forms as soon as possible.  Do not dispose of the Equipment List until your child has arrived fully laden at school on the day of his/her camp!  Thanks for your support.

CAMP NOTICE #2

Room 6 @ CAMP KAITAWA 2013
Notice #2

UPDATE – 21st October
Dear parents/caregivers
Room 6 children have a busy term ahead with many events that require parent support through November and early December, particularly around camp time, so please keep an eye on the Class Blog as all updates and notices will be posted there.

Thanks for your response to the Camp Kaitawa survey last term.  I was inundated with offers of parent help and transport for the duration of the camp.  Names had to be drawn as there were so many affirmatives and only 8 parents are required for the correct ratios.  All parents who replied will be contacted shortly.  If you missed out, it would be great if you could help out on Monday 9th December when we are optimist yachting.

Cost for the camp has been finalised at $150 per child (this includes optimist yachting on the Monday following camp).  Many thanks go to Fiona Rainbow for successfully organising a range of fundraising activities.  This reduced the cost significantly. It is important that all children attend camp so please contact the office or me as soon as possible if payment is difficult.

Camp Kaitawa has a limited number of kayaks and life jackets for us to use on Lake Wherowhero.  It would be great to have more to use.  If you have a kayak and life jacket that we could use at camp, please get in touch with me.

The clothing and gear list for camp will be out next week and it important that it is adhered to.  Raincoat, polyprops and suitable walking shoes are necessary!  To avoid expense, try borrowing or buying second hand.  Please let me know if you have extra items that could be used by other class members.

Thanks for your support
